While a filling can restore small amounts of decay, a crown is needed when the filling material makes up the bulk of the tooth.

Your tooth is prepared by the dentist. Then a mold of the tooth is made and a temporary crown is fabricated.

You leave the office as if nothing was done, and return to have the permanent crown put in place.
