Periodontal Therapy
Your gum pockets will be measured at each and every cleaning appointment. Healthy gums measure between 1-3 millimeters in depth. Gums pockets that are greater than 3 millimeters in depth, and bleed when measured are not as healthy as they can be. This is considered periodontal disease. If that is the case, periodontal therapy (also known as scaling and root planning or deep cleaning) is the initial course.
Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing is a procedure which allows the removal of contamination and infection from the base of your gum pocket. Often, scaling and root planing is down in two visits – one for each side of the mouth – using only topical anesthetic pastes that do not require an injection. If your gum pockets measure greater than 5 millimeters in any given area, more advanced periodontal (gum) procedures may be indicated to help restore your gums to optimal health.
